, washington. people want to talk about these ideas. there is a huge appetite for what is war? how do we understand this? i felt this was an example vacation for me as to what the humanities can be and do. i embrace what you say. i worry about the decline in humanity concentrators even in institutions like ours. there are some places where the humanities are expendable when we have to constrained resources. i think we do ourselves a terrible disservice as a country. it does not focus on how to get where it needs to go but knows where it ought to be going. that is a fundamental obligation. >> a great ending to a great panel. thank you. .s. by this weekend. >>> is another day of washington watching and waiting to see if the two sides are any closer to a deal to head off huge tax increases and deep spending cuts at the start of next year. president obama and house speaker john boehner are keeping tight lipped about their closed door weekend talks. but in michigan monday, the president had a warning about going over this now infamous fiscal cliff. >> consumer spending is going to go down. that means you've got less customers. businesses get fewer profits. they hire fewer workers. you go in a downward spiral. >> speaker boehner says he's still waiting for the president to identify spending cuts that he's willing to make to help deal with the nation's debt crisis. >>> thousands of demonstrators are expected to gather at the michigan state capital today in protest of a right-to-work measure. the legislation would bar unions from requiring non-union workers to pay those union fees. democrats met with the governor to urge a veto. and carollers gathered singing modified christmas songs in protest of the proposal. president obama said th

avila has been tracking the latest in washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, amy. the loss of this homegrown superstar, beloved on both sides of the border, is under investigation by u.s. and mexican officials. under scrutiny, the maintenance of the plane and the medical record of a pilot in his late 70s. mexican-american superstar jenni rivera may be lost. her twin-engine lear jet, spread over a 1,000-foot debris field. but overnight, her family refused to give up on a miracle. >> we have no confirmation of her body being recovered. we are strong. and we'll continue to stay strong. >> reporter: still, the news from investigators is not encouraging. reports of a rapid lost of altitu altitude, just outside monterrey, mexico, where the mexican-american superstar had performed the night before the crash. now, we're learning that the small twin-engine lear jet was old. it was a 43-year-old jet. and one of the two pilots was 78. both of those factors will be investigated by mexican authorities, aided by the american national transportation safety board. >> there's no age limit f

for you live. >> watching what's happening in washington today with the fiscal cliff. another round of negotiation between the white house and speaker john baker. aside is willing to bend. the president insisting that expiring tax cuts be renewed for everyone except for the wealthiest americans. republicans insist on deeper cuts in entitlement programs like medicare. neither side is given any specifics on what they're planning to cut. a likely compromise would include tax increases on the top tax bracket from 35 to 37 percent, not the 39% the president is asking. significant cuts to medicare to go into effect. the debt ceiling is also looming in these talks. the treasury say the u.s. is likely hit its 16.4 trillion dollar debt limit by the end of this year. the treasury could use creative measures that would stave off in the u.s. debt default until mid february. as far as where we are with these talks right now watching 10? we are basically nowhere. and is looking more likely that we will go off the fiscal cliff at the end of the year. 706 a m right now and we'll be back with more i
